Semester 1 

Thursday October 5th– Helmore 105- 4.30-6pm

Members will talk about the conferences they have attended over the summer and and PhD student Sophie Phelps will discuss her current work on Dickens.

Thursday October 12th– Helmore 112- 5-6pm

Our reading group begins! As usual, we will meet fortnightly. This semester we will be reading Charlotte Bronte’s Shirley in instalments. Please click here for details about each session. All are very welcome to come and tea, coffee, and cake will be provided.

Thursday October 19th– Helmore 105- 4.30-6pm

Paul Pattison will discuss his work on Middlemarch and Abderrezzaq Ghafsi will talk about his research on Dickens and Algeria.

Thursday 26th October– Helmore 114 – 4-5pm 

Edwin Marr will deliver a preliminary version of his conference paper on Branwell Bronte. This will be followed by the second session of our reading group on Shirley. 

Friday 3rd November – Helmore 115- 3.30-5pm

Professor Ruth Livesey (Royal Holloway) is coming to give our first visiting lecture of the year, ‘On Writing from the Middle: Middlemarch, George Eliot’s Midlands, and the Structures of Provincial Fiction’. All are very welcome. Tea, coffee, and cake will be provided.

Friday November 24th  Helmore 201- 2.45-6.30pm

Symposium: The Challenge of Religious Transformation in the 19th Century. More details about this event will follow. The afternoon will include talks by Andy Tate (Lancaster), Stephen Prickett (University of Kent) and Lesa Scholl (Unversity of Queensland, Australia) and myself.
