George Eliot and Her Circle: A One-Day Conference

Keynotes: Dr James Mussell (University of Leeds) and Dr Louise Lee (University of Roehampton)

We invite proposals on the conference theme of ‘George Eliot and her Circle’. Papers might address:

  • George Eliot’s novels, short stories, poetry, essays, reviews and translations
  • Eliot’s literary and intellectual relationships
  • George Henry Lewes and the circle that he and Eliot established around them
  • Comte and Feuerbach in Victorian England
  • Interfaces and influences between Eliot’s fiction and the fiction of her contemporaries
  • Publication venues including The Westminster Review, Blackwood’s Magazine and the Cornhill
  • Eliot’s engagement with developments in social sciences, philosophy, religion and science
  • Eliot’s responses to early feminism

Abstracts are invited for 20 minute papers. Please send abstracts of up to 300 words and a biographical statement of up to 100 words to elizabeth.ludlow@anglia.ac.uk by Monday 27th March 2017.
